Grenfell Jones

I wanted to express my sadness at the death of Grenfell Jones, better known as the cartoonist 'Gren' in the South Wales Echo. There is an article on him here at the BBC.

When I was taking through my Private Member's Bill on smoking in public places in Wales, Gren drew a cartoon of a woman in his fictional village of Aberflyarff standing at her back door, yelling down the garden to her mother who was hiding in the shed while cigarette smoke puffed out of the window. The caption read, "Stop that mam or I'll have Julie Morgan on you!"

Another favourite was during the Liberal Democrat leadership contest last year, when a Gren cartoon depicted Mike Ruddock turning up at Lembit Opik's office pleading with him not to support the Welsh rugby team after all of Opik's preferred candidates in the leadership battle had met with unfortunate ends.

I am sure that Gren's observations on life in Wales will be sorely missed by Echo readers and I express my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
